Smaug durmiendo encima de su tesoro
La contribución de J.R.R. Tolkien a la fantasía en general y al mundo de los dragones en particular es lo suficientemente importante como para dedicarle un aparte.
El concepto de grupo de Pj (especialistas con diferentes conocimientos trabajando juntos en pos de un fin común) deriva directamente de la «Comunidad del Anillo», mientras que su «punto de vista» acerca de las razas fantásticas más habituales -elfos, enanos, goblins, etcétera- es la fuente de la cual beben la mayoña de autores posteriores. Es el narrador de cuentos fantásticos más imitado de la historia, y su magistral descripción de Smaug, «la primera y la mayor de las calamidades» , es el patrón por el que el resto de los dragones de la literatura fantástica son juzgados.
Mientras que la tendencia de Grahame fue la de tratar a los dragones como criaturas astutas y listas, Tolkien les devuelve el perfil original de depredadores mortales. Todos los dragones de Tolkien -Smaug de El Hobbit, Glorund de El Silmarillion, el voluntarioso, pero no excesivamente valiente Chrystophlax de Egidio el Granjero de Ham- son inteligentes, no tienen escrúpulos y son terriblemente peligrosos.
Uno puede hacer un trato con ellos, pero todos son capaces de dar cuenta de un pequeño ejército o una ciudad por sí solos. Cualquiera que ose hablar con uno de los dragones de Tolkien debe asegurarse una vía de escape si no quiere convertirse en la siguiente comida de la criatura. Además, los dragones de Tolkien son expertos en el arte de la traición y la malicia: en vez de matar a Turin, un héroe valeroso pero no demasiado listo, Glorund le convence de que abandone a la gente que cree en él y lo envia a vagabundear sin norte, mientras que Smaug siembra la duda en la mente de Bilbo acerca de su relación con los enanos.
La gente que escucha a los dragones son susceptibles de caer bajo su embrujo («Smaug tenía una personalidad desbordante») , y si tienen una pizca de avaricia, ésta ya no le abandonara en la vida. Algunas veces la avaricia del dragón es contagiosa, se transmite al entrar en contacto con su tesoro «sobre el que el dragón ha dormido largo tiempo» -tal y como se observa en el fin de Thorin Escudo de Roble y, hasta cierto punto, en el propio Bilbo (cuyo robo secreto de la Arkenstone fue un acto reflejo). Similarmente a lo que ocurre con el tesoro de Fafnir, el de los nibelungos, parece llevar la desgracia a quien lo posee, incluso a aquellos que lo reclaman como suyo, por eso los paisanos de Beowulf se niegan a coger para sí el tesoro del dragón después de su muerte, deciden en lugar de ello apilarlo y quemarlo en la pira funeraria del monstruo.
Finalmente, los dragones de Tolkien son muy dificiles de matar. Smaug destruye Dale y el Reino Bajo la Montaña, acabando con toda resistencia, y eso lo hizo cuando era «joven y tierno» (según sus propias palabras). Más tarde, el libro nos ofrece una descripción detallada de su ataque en la ladera de la montaña y del incendio de la Ciudad del Lago. Si no hubiese resultado muerto por la certera flecha especial de Bardo, que hizo blanco en el único lugar vulnerable de la bestia, Tolkien especula acerca de la posibilidad de que Sauron hubiera intentado manipularlo para que destruyera Rivendel [2]

De igual modo, Glorund destruye la ciudad élfica de Nargothrond, dedicándose a destrozar escrupulosamente a todos sus defensores elfos, mientras otros dragones se centran en el saqueo de la ciudad escondida de Gondolin. Por su parte, Chrystophlax tiene muy pocas ganas de enfrentarse en combate cuerpo a cuerpo con un matadragones como Giles Claudimorax, pero cuando tiene la sensación de que podria perder su tesoro realiza una masacre que acaba con la caballeria del Pequeño Reino, para después sin esfuerzo aparente ahuyentar otro ejército. Es posible matar a uno de los grandes dragones, pero sólo después de una buena planificación y con una enorme dosis de suerte.
