DRAGONES MODERNOS
Después de Tolkien, los dragones volvieron a ser el eje de la literatura fantástica. Anne McCaffey los utilizó para llenar de fantasía sus novelas románticas de ciencia ficción. Ursula Le Guin rompió con la tradición de Tolkien basando los dragones de Earthsea en la mitología oriental en lugar de la occidental. Las Crónicas de Dragonlance® de Hickman y Weiss tuvieron en cuenta la capacidad destructiva de los dragones solitarios e imaginaron una horda de dragones arrasando un continente entero. Talking to Dragons (1985), de Patricia Wrede, resalta la importancia de la etiqueta y las buenas costumbres cuando uno entabla una relación con una de esas poderosísimas criaturas, basándose en los cuentos de hadas. Gordon R. Dickson hizo que el héroe de su novela The Dragon y el Jorge (1976) fuera un humano cuya mente había sido transferida al cuerpo de un dragón, por lo que debe acostumbrarse a los poderes y limitaciones de su nuevo cuerpo. La lista es interminable. Las posibilidades son enormes: de monstruos letales y de gran capacidad destructiva a pequeñas mascotas del tamaño de un gato, los dragones están por todas partes.
En Dragonlance, los dragones son parte fundamental de la historia del mundo.
Existen tres dragones especialmente interesantes, todos surgidos de libros publicados en los últimos veinticinco años. Glyd el Dragón, de Patricia A. McKilIip, de su libro The Forgotten Beast of Eld, es un viejo dragón, muy viejo, que sólo desea dormir sobre su tesoro; para él, su oro significa literalmente mucho más que su vida, y a pesar de ello cuando la bestia sale de su guarida masacra ejércitos, hunde barcos y hace que la guarnición de una ciudad se esconda prudentemente detrás de sus murallas. Una de las mejores descripciones acerca de un dragón que ya ha vivido muchos años. La lección de Bilbo de El Hobbit es siempre la misma: nunca despiertes al dragón que duerme.
En el extremo opuesto, en el libro Talking to Dragons, de Wrede (el primero y de largo el mejor de una serie de cuatro libros) describe un pequeño dragón, tan joven que aún no ha decidido su nombre ni su sexo. Wrede también nos ofrece unos trazos acerca de la política de los dragones, la abuela del joven dragón era el Rey de los Dragones (el título era invariable independientemente del sexo de su portador). Cualquier DM que tenga unos Pjs que hayan conseguido un huevo de dragón y que pretendan criarlo como mascota, familiar, o compañero, encontrará en el libro de Wrede muchísima y valiosa información, aparte de una buena lectura. Es quizás aún más intrigante la revelación que hace Wrede acerca de la razón que tienen los dragones para prefirir las princesas (revelación que se explica con mayor detalle en el resto de libros de la serie).
