Los poetas dan algunas veces a las regiones infernales los nombres de Ténaro, Erebo y Orco. El Ténaro era un promontorio de Laconia que tenía en uno de sus extremos una profunda caverna de la que salían tantos vapores negros e infectos, que la crédula imaginación del vulgo llegó a creer que allí se abría el vestíbulo del infierno.
Se otorga el nombre de Erebo a la región más tenebrosa del reino de las sombras; en lenguaje poético “la noche del Erebo” quiere significar el sepulcro, la muerte, el infierno. Orco, uno de los sobrenombres que se dan a Plutón, ha sido también empleado para el mismo reino en que este dios ejerce su poderío: “bajar al Orco” vale tanto como decir que se desciende a la morada de los muertos.
