Para los celtas, el dragón era una divinidad de los bosques, cuya fuerza podía ser controlada y utilizada por los magos.Entre los conquistadores celtas de Britania fue símbolo de soberanía, y durante la ocupación romana de la isla adornó los estandartes de guerra, convirtiéndose en un símbolo heráldico y luego militar.
Entre los romanos, como se dijo más arriba, el dragón era considerado un símbolo de poder y sabiduría.
Para la mitología eslava, el dragón era una de las formas que adoptaba el dios Veles, señor del Mundo Subterráneo, adversario de Perún, dios del trueno.
Los cristianos heredaron la idea hebrea del dragón, que aparece en el Apocalipsis, del apóstol Juan, y en otras tradiciones posteriores. En el arte cristiano del Medievo simboliza el pecado y al aparecer bajo los pies de los santos y mártires representa el triunfo de la fe y los reinos cristianos sobre el diablo. La leyenda de San Jorge y el dragón, ilustrada en la figura de la derecha, muestra claramente este significado.
En el simbolismo medieval la idea de lucha contra dragones sirvió para fortalecer la motivación de los reinos cristianos.Se presentaban a menudo también como representaciones de la apostasía, la herejía y la traición, pero también de cólera y envidia, y presagiaban grandes calamidades. Varias veces significaban la decadencia y la opresión, aunque sirvieron también como símbolos para la independencia, el liderazgo y la fuerza. Los colores a menudo determinaron el simbolismo que un dragón tenía. En la pauta del viaje del héroe, los dragones representaron el obstáculo o el temor, y el paso necesario para volver al hogar, y como muchos dragones se presentan también como la encarnación de la sabiduría, en esas tradiciones matar a uno de ellos no sólo daba acceso a sus riquezas sino también significaba que el caballero había vencido a la más astuta de las criaturas. Otra faceta del dragón en la mitología clásica de la época caballeresca es el dragón como guardián que custodia o secuestra princesas en sus castillos.
En el occidente de la actualidad es casi siempre concebido a la «hollywoodesca» es malvado, poderoso y cruel, una de las hazañas clásicas de los héroes (Hércules, Sigurd, San Miguel, San Jorge) era lograr matar un Dragón, en las leyendas alemanas antiguas protegían tesoros y secretos. En el dragón se ven la serpiente y el ave, como la tierra y el aire, los cuernos representan virilidad y fuerza, tomando forma de cuernos de ciervo, cabra, antílope o toro. De la misma forma la cola es de cocodrilo o dinosaurio, de pez o anguila, y hasta de delfín o culebra, Siempre se resume en la combinación de Fuego y agua. Y algunos lo caracterizan como un rasgo de cada estación, una seca y otra húmeda, Así es uno pensaría que debería verse como una cosa revuelta y sin forma, pero siempre ha sido un ser hermoso, imponente y de apariencia única. El dragón es sin duda y seguirá siendo el rey de los animales fantásticos y el mundo de la fantasía.
Apariciones en la mitología moderna
La mitología moderna ha empleado recurrentemente el símbolo del dragón extendiendo supervivencia en el imaginario; pero también ha usado su imagen reduciéndolo a un poderoso monstruo casi invencible. Las múltiples apariciones de dragones, sin embargo, hacen uso frecuente de elementos tradicionales e innovadores en la criatura que amplían sus alcances y estimulan más la imaginación. Encontramos así dragones de orejas largas, alas mecánicas, que escupen hielo, dragones sin cola, zombies, humanoides, comedores de pasto, magos, etc. Ver por ejemplo Dragones de Dungeons & Dragons.
