En el Oriente Próximo simbolizaba el mal y la ruina.
En Enuma Elish, una epopeya escrita hacia el 2000 a. C., la diosa Tiamat es un dragón que simboliza los océanos y comanda las hordas del mal, cuya destrucción previa era necesaria para crear un nuevo universo ordenado.
En la Biblia hebrea el dragón representa el mal, la muerte y a veces la sabiduría.
En la mitología persa destaca el caso del Azi Dahaka, un dragón malévolo.
En Rumanía, el dragón geto-dacio que tenía cabeza de lobo y cola de serpiente. Esta imagen era empleada en la guerra ya que en la bandera de Dacia aparece un dragón.
