En muchas culturas orientales los dragones eran, y en algunos cultos son todavía, reverenciados como representantes de las fuerzas primitivas de la naturaleza y el universo.
En Oriente, el dragón siempre se ha considerado un criatura benéfica y un símbolo de buena fortuna.
A diferencia de sus congéneres occidentales, los dragones orientales no escupen fuego ni tienen alas, aunque normalmente pueden volar gracias a la magia. Un dragón típico de Oriente tiene cuernos de ciervo, cabeza de caballo, cuello de serpiente, garras de águilas, orejas de toro y bigotes largos como los de los gatos. En las leyendas chinas hay dragones que vigilan los cielos, dragones que traen la lluvia, y dragones que controlan los ríos y arroyos. En Japón, donde se los tiene por seres sabios, amables y siempre dispuestos a ayudar, los dragones han sido, durante siglos, el emblema oficial de la familia imperial.
Los dragones chinos y japoneses simbolizan el poder espiritual supremo, el poder terrenal y celestial, el conocimiento y la fuerza, y por lo tanto son benévolos. El dragón es la insignia más antigua del arte de estos países.Proporcionan salud y buena suerte y viven en el agua. Según las antiguas creencias chinas, traen la lluvia para la recolección. Es por eso que el dragón se convirtió en el símbolo imperial de ese país.
En el Himalaya representan la buena suerte.
Corea, como se dijo antes, también tiene sus dragones, de similar carácter positivo.
También éste se representa con cuernos y escamas, y su espinazo está erizado como en púas, y tiene una perla en la garganta que puede escupir, la cual representa el poder del sol que en él reside y es la base de su fuerza y sus poderes. Esta poderosa gema es la piedra más sagrada y preciosa, de brillo propio y muy, pero muy, pesada, la llaman: «piedra que concede todos los deseos» y está situada exactamente en el nivel nueve del cuello de un dragón. La perla puede regir, y de hecho rige, las mareas, las fases de la luna, la lluvia, el trueno, el rayo y el mismo ciclo de la vida > muerte > transformación > renacimiento. Los dragones, a veces, las escupen y su brillo puede iluminar bien una casa entera y, de hecho, lo mejor de estas poderosas piedras es: saborearlas, pues saben al mejor y más fino sorbo de vino jamás creado. Además, quien posea una jamás podrá abusar de ella para su beneficio propio y sólo podrá usarse siempre para lo que fue creada: el beneficio común de la naturaleza y todas sus especies (incluidos los humanos).
