Diferentes culturas le han dado originales denominaciones, valga entre ellas, la famosa"Luna azul", "Luna de la Cosecha", "Luna Roja o de Abril", "Luna de agua miel", etc.
La tan famosa "Luna azul", es llamada así cuando se produce una segunda Luna Llena en un mismo mes, esto sucede, cuando coincide una el primer o segundo día del mes y la segunda en el último o viceversa (el mes sinódico lunar es de 29,35 días). El nombre, "Luna azul"no tiene que ver con su color en sí, aunque a veces, puede producirse este raro fenómeno, el escritor Patrick Moore célebre por haber escrito varios libros de divulgación astronómica, cuenta su experiencia al respecto allá por el año 1950 en Gran Bretaña. Comenta Moore al respecto, varias observaciones de lunas azules reales, por ejemplo, en 1944 en USA, 1949 en Queensland, Australia y en Inglaterra en 1950. fue en esta última ocasión que Moore comenta que se vio en un cielo algo brumos, una Luna de maravilloso color azul, comentó al respecto que jamás había presenciado nada semejante. Se cree posible que este fenómeno sea producido por polvo de atmósfera a gran altitud.
Sobre la conocida como "Luna de la cosecha" (para latitudes medias), esta Luna Llena se produce próxima al equinoccio de Septiembre. En esta fecha el Sol está próximo al equinoccio de Septiembre y por lo tanto, la Luna lo estará cerca del punto del equinoccio vernal (o de Marzo). Esto, hace que la Luna presente una trayectoria lo menos inclinada al salir, por lo que durante varias noches se eleva muy rápidamente, de este modo hay luz de Luna Llena temprano en la noche, esto favorece el trabajo de cosecha. Este efecto ocurre sólo para las latitudes medias, tanto norte como sur. La luz extra proporcionada por la Luna llena permite a los agricultores prolongar un poco la jornada de trabajo en esta época de recogida de los frutos del campo.
Pero, "Luna de la cosecha" según los Incas (Aymoray Quilla), se producía en Mayo (hemisferio sur), el maíz se seca para ser almacenado por este tiempo.
