Ceres, más veloz que el rayo llegó hasta las márgenes del Aqueronte, preguntando ansiosa a todos los que encontraba a su paso. Pero Proserpina acababa de echar mano de una granada ofrecida por Plutón, símbolo del matrimonio, y había comido ya algunos granos.
Su retorno a la tierra era, por tanto, imposible, ya que quien come del mundo de los muertos, no regresa al de los vivos. No obstante, y a fuerza de ruegos, Ceres pudo obtener que su hija morase en los infiernos sólo durante seis meses del año y que pudiese pasar los otros seis sobre la tierra.
Así por lo tanto, en primavera Proserpina vuelve al mundo exterior y su madre Ceres renueva y florece la naturaleza debido a la dicha que le invade, mientras que cuando Proserpina debe volver a bajar al mundo de los muertos en otoño junto a Plutón, Ceres queda desolada y triste, comunicando este ánimo a los cultivos, plantas y árboles, los cuales pierden sus hojas o quedan marchitos.
