Proserpina (o Perséfone para los griegos), hija de Ceres (Demeter para los griegos), vivía retirada en Sicilia, junto a las campiñas del Etna, y allí gustaba de pasar su juventud en paz e inocencia. Un día que se entretenía con sus compañeras cogiendo flores recién abiertas, Plutón la divisó y la raptó a bordo de un carruaje tirado por cuatro caballos negros, a pesar de sus protestas y de las amonestaciones de Minerva.
