oscuros y elfos negros respectivamente, negros refiriéndose al color de cabello y no a la piel) son unas criaturas de la mitología nórdica que residen bajo tierra con características similares a los enanos (duergar) y son la contraparte de los elfos de la luz, los Ljósálfar.
El Svartalfar original trabajó las fraguas en el nivel más bajo del árbol del mundo. Sus papel y aspecto varía a través de folclore germánico pero se mencionan a veces con la piel negra u oscura como resultado del trabajo en la forja.
Los Dökkálfar ("Elfos oscuros") son espíritus ancestrales que protegen a la gente, si bien pueden también ser amenazadores, especialmente cuando se les trata groseramente. Normalmente intentan evitar la luz, aunque no sean necesariamente subterráneos.
En la mitología nórdica, Fenrir (Fenris) es uno de los tres monstruos que nacieron de la unión entre Loki y Angrboda: la diosa de la muerte Hel, la serpiente gigante Jörmungandr, y el gran lobo Fenrir (también Fenris o Frenrihr)
Al principio sólo era un cachorro, pero conforme se le alimentó comenzó a crecer, y pronto fue tan grande que era imposible controlarlo. Dos veces fallaron los dioses en su intento por apresarlo (primero con la cadena Leding y luego con una más fuerte llamada Droma) ya que se liberaba con gran sencillez.
Los dioses del Asgard pidieron la fabricación de una ligadura irrompible a los enanos. Éstos les fabricaron una cinta liviana, dulce, sedosa y fina, y que sin embargo nadie podría romper, pues estaba fabricada con el sonido de la pisada del gato, la barba de la mujer, las raíces de la montaña, los nervios del oso, el soplo de los peces y la saliva del pájaro. La llamaron Gleipnir.
