Hermes llevaba un bastón como el que se ve en la imagen.También se puede apreciar su pétaso (sombreo de ala ancha). Sus símbolos eran el gallo y la tortuga.
Dios de las fronteras y viajeros, de los comerciantes, de los pastores y vacadas, de los inventos, de los poetas y de la astucia de los ladrones y mentirosos.
Hermes era el heraldo de los dioses, y compartía esa función con Iris.
De Hermes procede la palabra «hermenéutica» para el arte de interpretar los significados ocultos. Como heraldo de los dioses, predomina utilizando la palabra y como orador. Así pues, también era el mensajero de los dioses.
Por esto mismo, en los sacrificios de animales, se le ofecían las lenguas de éstos a Hermes.
Aquí se ve a Hermes poniendose una de sus sandalias, que eran aladas.
Hermes fue el creador del fuego, y por ello se le considera un paralelo con el Titán Prometeo.
Además, se dice que también ayudaba a guiar a las almas de los difuntos al inframundo, y que era el unico dios que podría entrar, aparte claro está de Hades y Perséfone.
Ayudaba a los viajeros y a los mercaderes a tener unos viajes seguros, por ello muchos griegos le dedicaban ofrendas antes de viajar.
Hijos de Hermes:
Pan: Dios griego sátiro de la naturaleza, ovejas y rebaños. Se desconoce a la madre.
Hermafrodito: Hijo inmortal de Hermes con Afrodita. Luego se convirtió en Hermafrodita.
Tiene muchos mas hijos, pero no de mayor importancia.
