HERMES
Hermes es el hijo de Zeus y Maya. Adquirió el patronazgo sobre los viajes por tierra. También era el dios de los pastores, los mercaderes, los pesos y medidas, la oratoria, la literatura, el atletismo y los ladrones. Sus símbolos eran el gallo y la tortuga, y podía reconocérsele por su monedero o bolsa, sus sandalias aladas, su pétaso (sombrero de ala ancha) y su caduceo (bastón de heraldo).Hermes era el dios de los ladrones porque era muy astuto y perspicaz, y fue él mismo un ladrón desde la noche en que nació, cuando se escapó de su madre, la ninfa Maya, y se fugó para robar el ganado de su hermano mayor Apolo. Hermes condujo el ganado de vuelta a Grecia y lo escondió, borrando sus huellas. Cuando Apolo le acusó, Maya dijo que no podía ser porque estuvo con ella toda la noche, pero sin embargo Zeus intervino en la discusión y dijo que Hermes había robado el ganado y tenía que devolverlo. Mientras discutían, Hermes comenzó a tocar su lira. El instrumento encantó a Apolo, quien accedió a permitir que Hermes se quedase con el ganado a cambio de la lira.Hermes fue muy leal a su padre Zeus, salvándolo, cuando se enamoró de Ío, del gigante de cien ojos Argos, durmiendo a éste con historias y canciones y decapitándolo entonces. Hermes suele ser retratado llevando un pétaso (sombrero de ala ancha que usaban los viajeros para protegerse del sol y la lluvia) o un gorro alado, calzando sandalias con alas (talaria) y portando una vara de mensajero de Oriente Próximo, con dos serpientes entrelazadas copulando, llamada caduceo. Vestía las ropas de un viajero, trabajador o pastor.
