HADES… Dios de los infiernos.
Aunque no existia plegaria que lo aplacara, Hades no era un dios maligno. En los infiernos se juzgaba la vida de los que habían muerto y en función de ella se decidia su destino: el Elíseo para las almas buenas o el Tártaro para las malas. Su versión romana Plutón, era más benigna porque se consideraba que proporcionaba las riquezas del mundo.
Hijo mayor del titán Cronos y de la titánide Rea y hermano de Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Deméter y Hestia. Dios del inframundo, el arma de Hades era un cetro de dos puntas, que usaba para destrozar todo lo que se cruzase por su camino y con el que conducía las almas de los muertos hasta el mundo inferior.
Así mismo, su reino subterráneo suele ser llamado Hades y la entrada a dicho reino está siempre resguardada por Cerbero, el perro de tres cabezas y cola de serpiente. Estaba dividido en dos regiones: Erebo, donde los muertos entran en cuanto mueren, y Tártaro, la región más profunda.
Siniestros ríos separaban el mundo subterráneo del mundo superior, Los cinco ríos del reino de Hades y su significado simbólico eran el Aqueronte (el río de la pena o la congoja), el Cocito (lamentaciones), el Flegetonte (fuego), Lete (olvido) y Estigia (odio), el río sobre el que incluso los dioses juraban y en el que Aquiles fue sumergido para hacerlo invencible. El Estigia formaba la frontera entre los mundos superior e inferior y el anciano barquero Caronte conducía a las almas de los muertos a través de estas aguas, no sin antes reclamar su pago que era una moneda que los amigos o familiares debían poner sobre los ojos o en la boca del cadaver.
La palabra hais, o haides o hades significa “invisible”, y también“aquel que vuelve invisibles a los demás”. Allá abajo, en los Infiernos, estaba absolutamente prohibido mirar a la cara a Hades o a su esposa Perséfone: quien transgredía esa prohibición se volvía, a su vez, invisible. Hades posee también un casco que le proporciona la invisibilidad al que lo porte, en ocasiones lo prestaba a mortales o dioses. También tiene un carro oscuro, tirado por cuatro caballos negros como el carbón, siempre resultaba impresionante y pavoroso.
Casado con Perséfore, su unión no tuvo hijos. Se le atribuye a Hades dos infidelidades conyugales, una con la ninfa Mente, a la que su esposa trasformó en la planta de la menta y otra con una hija del Océano, Leuce.
