griegos, indica Dumézil que “los dioses no intervienen en los tiempos históricos de Roma más que como están autorizados a hacerlo: mediante signos, mediante algunos favores o cóleras reconocibles por sus efectos, pero casi nunca con portentos o teofanías”. Sólo esta concepción en la cosmovisión romana ya indica un cambio sustancial con respecto a la mentalidad de otros pueblos de la antigüedad, porque mientras Grecia o Egipto habían desarrollado en imágenes grandiosas lo que ellos creían que habían sido el génesis y las épocas del mundo, la obra y aventuras de los dioses en sus cosmogonías, Roma quiso simplemente exponer sus propios inicios y sus propios periodos, la obra y aventuras de los reyes que, según se creía, habían dado forma a su ciudad.
Ya en época de transición entre la República y el Imperio (s I a.C. – I d.C.), esta cosmovisión de unos reyes fundacionales semi-divinos fue aprovechada para instaurar y legitimar el nuevo régimen imperial. La divinización de un ser humano era ya aceptada en la Roma de los primeros tiempos y las corrientes filosófico-religiosas principales de la época de la transición, la estoica y la epicúrea, influenciadas por el pensamiento oriental, no eran contrarias a este hecho. Pero a diferencia de otras civilizaciones de la antigüedad como la egipcia, donde el rey era un dios encarnado y legitimado por su propia divinidad, el emperador romano, en vida, no era aún un dios, sólo un agente de los dioses. Si se mostraba digno de la misión confiada, el buen gobierno y la estabilidad del Imperio, sería definitivamente deificado por el pueblo y el Senado, convirtiéndose en divus y obteniendo el derecho a un culto oficial. Hubo así en la memoria de Roma buenos y malos emperadores y sólo los primeros tuvieron templos y sacerdotes.
Esta mentalidad romana, más sobria, funcional y pragmática que la de otros pueblos, constituye una influencia de primer orden en el desarrollo de nuestra propia mentalidad occidental, cuyo pragmatismo hemos llevado a límites todavía insospechados. Juzguemos por nosotros mismos qué consecuencias, positivas y negativas, se han derivado de ello.
