El Tártaro era el lugar donde se hallaban Ticio, cuyo seno era roído por un buitre; Tántalo, corriendo sin cesar tras la onda fugitiva, y las Danaides, esforzándose por llenar un tonel sin fondo. Ticio era uno de los gigantes, el cual ofendió a Latona, madre de Apolo, y fué muerto por este dios de un flechazo. Tántalo, que había asesinado a su propio hijo, estaba condenado a ser devorado por la sed a pesar de hallarse rodeado de agua y a tener siempre hambre aunque tuviese a su alcance un árbol de fruta. Las Danaides habían asesinado a sus esposos la noche de bodas.
